Rogers Expands Bicycle Infrastructure with 13th Street Cycle Track Project

The City of Rogers is taking significant steps to enhance its bicycle infrastructure with the development of the 13th Street Cycle Track, a dedicated cycling facility that will stretch from Walnut to Little Flock. Set to be completed by Spring 2025, this project aims to create a safe and efficient north/south arterial route for cyclists, integrating with the broader citywide bicycle network.

Project Goals:

  • Safety and Connectivity: The primary objective of the 13th Street Cycle Track is to provide a safe and dedicated facility for cyclists along 13th Street, which will serve as a key north/south corridor in the city’s bicycle network. This development aligns with Rogers' ongoing efforts to promote alternative transportation modes and ensure safer streets for all users.

Current Status:

  • Survey and Design: TEC, the project consultant, is currently conducting signal replacement surveys at key intersections, specifically at Hudson and Olive Streets. This is a critical step in preparing the area for the new infrastructure.

Action Items:

  • Signal Plans:

    • Plans for the Hudson signal pole replacement have been submitted to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) for approval.

    • The Olive signal plans are being refined to accommodate the new bicycle signalization, ensuring the cycle track integrates seamlessly with existing traffic controls.

  • School Coordination: The project team is also working with Lingle Middle School, which has decided not to relocate pickup/drop-off traffic. This decision necessitates further planning to integrate school traffic with the cycle track without compromising safety.

  • Street Department Coordination: The Rogers Street Department is on board for milling and overlay work, although the timeline for this aspect is still to be determined.

  • Refinement and Improvement: Ongoing efforts include refining the design and vetting of existing conditions to incorporate proposed improvements. The project team is also exploring material options and pricing for delineation, which will define the boundaries of the cycle track and ensure cyclist safety.

Funding:

  • The project is funded by a combination of a Walton Family Foundation (WFF) grant and city matching funds, reflecting a strong public-private partnership aimed at improving local infrastructure.

Looking Ahead:

  • The 13th Street Cycle Track is part of a broader initiative to make Rogers a more bike-friendly city. Once completed, it will provide a crucial link in the city’s cycling infrastructure, promoting healthier, more sustainable transportation options for residents.

Project Management:

  • The project is being managed by Kent Laughlin, with TEC serving as the consulting firm.

Residents and cyclists in Rogers can look forward to a safer, more connected cycling route along 13th Street, enhancing the city’s reputation as a forward-thinking community that prioritizes both safety and mobility.
