$101K Grant to Fund Active Transportation Education Campaign

BELLA VISTA, Ark. — The City of Bella Vista is receiving over $100,000 in grant funding to launch a new public education campaign focused on biking and walking—marking a major investment in the city’s growing active transportation network.

The funding—$101,496 in total—comes from a partnership between the Arkansas Department of Transportation and the Walton Family Foundation. It will fully fund a new Active Transportation Public Outreach and Education Project aimed at promoting safety, accessibility, and awareness around trails, sidewalks, and bike infrastructure.

“This project supports our vision of a more connected, walkable, and bike-friendly Bella Vista,” said Mayor John Flynn. “We want residents to understand the options available to them and how to use them safely.”

The city’s trail system and bike amenities have expanded rapidly in recent years, including the construction of the Blue Crane bike park, which some residents have praised for boosting local tourism and recreation. Others, however, have raised concerns about safety, particularly in areas lacking sidewalks or proper signage.

During public comments at the last council meeting, one resident urged the city to add paved sidewalks and parking to accompany the new bike park and voiced concern about potential safety risks.

The new education campaign is expected to launch later this year and will include community workshops, signage, online resources, and potential partnerships with schools and local organizations.

City staff said the grant funding requires no local match and will be added to the 2025 city budget.
