The Singing Kites of Bentonville

In Bentonville, Arkansas, a new artistic endeavor is set to transform a mundane traffic roundabout into a vibrant display of creativity and community spirit. On June 3, 2024, the Traffic Safety and Signage Committee convened at Bentonville City Hall to discuss several key projects, one of which was the proposed permanent art installation in the roundabout at Water Tower Rd and SE 8th St.

Shelli Kerr, representing the City of Bentonville, presented the recommendation from the Public Art Advisory Committee. The chosen artwork, titled "Singing Kites" by artists Shelby Fleming and Simone Cottrell, features three steel kites ranging in height from 72 inches to 180 inches. The design is intended to evoke a sense of freedom and joy, reminiscent of kites soaring in the sky on a breezy day.

The proposal, which had been meticulously reviewed and approved by the Public Art Advisory Committee on May 14, 2024, includes detailed plans and responses to questions posed by the committee. The artwork is scheduled for installation following the approval of the City Council on June 11, 2024.

As Kerr explained, the "Singing Kites" installation aims to not only beautify the roundabout but also to create a landmark that residents and visitors alike can enjoy. The project reflects Bentonville's commitment to integrating art into public spaces, enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal and fostering a sense of community pride.
