"The Red Ball Project" in Downtown Bentonville
In an exciting development for art lovers and residents alike, the Bentonville City Council has approved a resolution endorsing the temporary installation of "The Red Ball Project," a globally recognized public art piece by artist Kurt Perschke. The installation is set to take place on September 11, 2024, in the alley between 114 and 120 West Central Avenue.
The Red Ball Project, known for its whimsical and innovative nature, is a massive inflatable red ball that has appeared in unexpected locations around the world. From narrow alleyways to historic landmarks and busy urban streets, the project aims to engage the public with art in a playful and thought-provoking way. The Bentonville installation will be part of a regional initiative organized by the Northwest Arkansas Municipal Arts Alliance (MAA) and coordinated by the Creative Arkansas Community Hub & Exchange (CACHE).
The City of Bentonville's participation in this project follows its involvement in the NWA Municipal Arts Alliance in 2022 and 2023. The Alliance received a "mini grant" to fund this regional public art initiative, with The Red Ball Project selected as the traveling artwork to be featured across five cities in Northwest Arkansas.
On September 11, the giant red ball will be carefully positioned in the downtown alley, where it will be squeezed between the buildings at a height that allows pedestrians to walk underneath it, maintaining the alley’s accessibility and walkability. The installation is designed to be temporary, with the ball being set up and removed on the same day by The Red Ball Project Team. Local property owners and city departments, including Utilities and Transportation, have been notified and have expressed no concerns, ensuring that the display will proceed smoothly.
Funding for The Red Ball Project's appearance in Bentonville is provided by CACHE, meaning there is no cost to the city for this unique and engaging art experience.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Bentonville to be part of an international art movement,” said Shelli Kerr, AICP, Comprehensive Planning Manager, who presented the proposal on behalf of the Bentonville Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC). “The Red Ball Project brings art into the public sphere in a way that’s both fun and meaningful, and we’re thrilled to see it come to our downtown.”
The temporary installation of The Red Ball Project is expected to attract visitors and art enthusiasts to Bentonville’s downtown area, contributing to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. Residents and visitors are encouraged to experience the installation and participate in what promises to be a memorable and visually striking event.
