City Approves Funding for Razorback Greenway Bridge Repairs with FEMA Reimbursement on the Horizon

Bentonville, AR – The Razorback Greenway Flyover Bridge, a popular feature on NE A Street, will soon undergo significant repairs after storm damage forced its closure earlier this year. At the October 22 Finance Committee meeting, officials approved a $137,513.29 budget adjustment for repairs, citing the importance of restoring safe and reliable infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.

Details of the Damage and Planned Repairs
The Flyover Bridge sustained critical structural damage in the May 26 storm, prompting an immediate evaluation by structural engineers. The inspection revealed that a key support beam and various handrails needed replacement to ensure the bridge’s integrity. The approved funding will go toward fabricating and installing five new handrail sections, as well as procuring a crane and other necessary equipment to complete the repairs. The work, which includes using weather-resistant materials matching the existing design, is expected to take 3-4 weeks.

In addition to restoring this vital piece of public infrastructure, officials hope the repairs will secure FEMA reimbursement, potentially covering up to 75% of the project’s costs. Parks and Recreation staff highlighted the importance of securing this reimbursement, noting the impact it will have on the city’s general fund reserves.

Maintaining Warranty and Ensuring Safety
The city decided to waive competitive bidding requirements and hire Crossland Heavy Contractors for the repairs. This move preserves the bridge’s warranty, which remains active until April 2025, and allows the repairs to proceed quickly with a contractor familiar with the bridge’s specifications. Bentonville insures the bridge for $8.5 million, further emphasizing the value of these repairs.

“Ensuring the safety and longevity of our community’s infrastructure is a top priority,” said Josh Stacey, Bentonville’s Parks and Recreation Deputy Director. “We’re looking forward to reopening the bridge for everyone to enjoy.”
