Waiver Request Tabled for New Operations Building at Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel
The Bella Vista Planning Commission has decided to table a waiver request related to the construction of a new operations building at the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel. The request, submitted by Cathy Barnes, seeks an exemption from pedestrian accommodation requirements outlined in city regulations.
The Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel, an architectural gem nestled within 10 acres of scenic landscape, is a popular site for weddings, events, and visitors who appreciate its serene setting and unique design. The new operations building, which will cover 1,085 square feet, is intended to support the chapel’s ongoing activities and maintenance needs.
However, the waiver request to bypass the installation of new sidewalks along Memorial Drive has raised questions. The applicant argues that the surrounding area already features extensive pedestrian pathways and trails that connect the chapel to its parking lot and other points of interest. Additionally, the chapel is situated in a relatively isolated location with minimal nearby development, reducing the need for additional pedestrian infrastructure.
“The chapel is a beloved part of our community, and it’s important that any new development respects both its character and the surrounding environment,” said [Planning Official]. “The Planning Commission needs more time to consider the implications of the waiver request and ensure that any decisions made are in the best interest of the community.”
The decision to table the request allows for further review and discussion, with input from both city planners and the public. The Planning Commission will revisit the waiver request at a future meeting, where they will weigh the benefits of pedestrian accommodations against the specific circumstances of the chapel’s location.
In the meantime, the proposed operations building remains a key project for the chapel, aimed at enhancing its functionality and preserving its role as a cherished landmark in Bella Vista.
