Proposed Septic Permit Requirements Aim to Protect Bella Vista’s Environment

The Bella Vista Planning Commission has reviewed a proposed amendment to Sec. 103-189, which would require permits for septic system installations, repairs, and replacements not associated with new construction. This initiative, introduced at the request of Councilman Wilms, seeks to address critical environmental and public health concerns.

Bella Vista, with over 75% of its homes relying on individual septic systems, faces unique challenges. The amendment would:

  • Ensure proper installation and maintenance of septic systems.

  • Protect the city’s lakes, waterways, and groundwater from potential contamination.

  • Collect essential data to assess and manage Bella Vista’s wastewater infrastructure.

“Staff finds it imperative that the city begins collecting this data to understand the current state of the wastewater systems,” the proposal states, highlighting the need for better oversight.

The proposed changes would also mandate that licensed professionals handle installations and repairs, ensuring compliance with city codes and protecting public health
