Citizens Voice Safety Concerns Over Temporary Route Along Highway 71
During the August 26, 2024, Bella Vista City Council meeting, local resident Amy Darpinian raised concerns about the safety of a temporary route along Highway 71, which is being used by hikers and bikers due to a bridge washout over Sugar Creek. This alternative route has become a significant safety issue, especially for families and school staff commuting to Cooper Elementary School, which is located near the highway.
Darpinian urged the City Council to take swift action to ensure the safety of those using the route, proposing that concrete barriers be installed by August 14. She explained that the current lack of protective measures makes the path perilous, particularly for young students and their families.
The city is actively addressing the issue, with Council Member Larry Wilms acknowledging the importance of safety on Highway 71. Wilms informed attendees that the city had applied for a Department of Transportation (DOT) study grant to explore potential improvements along the highway, such as enhanced side lanes for bikers. He emphasized the importance of balancing safety improvements with the highway's role as a main commuter route for local workers, where traffic speeds need to be maintained.
Council Member Doug Fowler shared similar concerns, noting his own experience with a recent car accident involving a deer on Highway 71. He expressed his understanding of the dangers posed by the route and reaffirmed the city's commitment to seeking solutions that would protect pedestrians and bikers alike while maintaining the road’s functionality for commuters
